Know When to Enroll in Your Plan
When you enroll in your plan depends on the type of health insurance you need. If you are shopping for a Blue ACA Metal plan, you should know that Open Enrollment—the only time you can enroll in or make changes to your health insurance plan—is over. This means, you can enroll in a health insurance plan and apply for federal financial help to help you pay for your plan only if you have a special circumstance that qualifies you for a Special Enrollment period.
ACA Metal Health Insurance Plans
Open Enrollment ended on February 15. But you might still be able to enroll in an ACA Metal health insurance plan if you have a qualifying life event. Qualifying life events are special circumstances as defined by the federal government that allow you to have a Special Enrollment period. Most Special Enrollment periods start on the date of the qualifying life event and end 60 days later. You can start shopping for a new ACA metal plan 60 days before the date of the event. You can learn more about qualifying life events and Special Enrollment on our Education Center. If you qualify for Special Enrollment, shop BlueCrossNEPAStore.com.
You can get more information on qualifying life events and take a screening to see if you qualify for Special Enrollment when you visit healthcare.gov. Keep in mind, you have a limited amount of time to make a change or enroll in a new health insurance plan. The day your new coverage can start will depend on your circumstance and when you apply.

If you are turning 65, your Initial Enrollment period for Original Medicare (Medicare Parts A and B) depends on when you turn 65. Once you have Original Medicare, you may consider adding one of our BlueCare®Security Medigap Plans or enrolling in our Medicare Advantage Plan, FreedomBlueSM PPO plan. Medicaid and CHIP
If your income is below 133% of the Federal Poverty Level, you may qualify for low-cost or no-cost health insurance through government programs, such as Medicaid. In many cases, if you qualify for Medicaid and you have children, they will qualify for either Medicaid or CHIP. CHIP covers uninsured children and teens up to age 19 in Pennsylvania, and may cover your kids even if you make too much money to qualify for Medicaid. You can learn more about CHIP on their website, insuredkidsnow.gov.
There is no Open Enrollment period for Medicaid and CHIP. You can apply for Medicaid or CHIP year round on Pennsylvania’s website or call 1.866.550.4355. You can also read more about qualifying on the federal government’s website at healthcare.gov.
